The answer depends on what we mean by "strengthened."
If we mean that repeatedly forcing ourselves to resist temptations automatically creates a broad, transferable reservoir of self-control that can be applied equally well to every area of life, the scientific evidence is not strong enough to make that claim.
But there is a much more useful and defensible answer: we can progressively develop our ability to perform specific behaviors, establish reliable routines, build habits, improve our strategies for dealing with resistance, and make desired behaviors increasingly automatic.
That is the idea behind progressive discipline.
Rather than waiting until we somehow become "more disciplined," we deliberately practice disciplined behavior, establish systems that support it, and gradually take on greater challenges as our existing behaviors become reliable.
The goal isn't to turn life into a constant battle of willpower.
The goal is to become increasingly reliable at doing what we have decided is important.
What Is Progressive Discipline?
Progressive discipline is the deliberate practice of increasingly demanding behaviors while developing the routines, habits, strategies, and environmental conditions that make those behaviors sustainable.
The concept borrows something useful from physical training: progression.
But the analogy has limits.
Physical training has strong evidence that progressively increasing resistance can produce physiological adaptations such as increased muscular strength. We cannot assume that repeatedly exercising self-control produces an equivalent, generalized increase in some mental "self-control muscle." Research on self-control training has produced mixed results.
A 2017 meta-analysis of 33 studies found an apparent small-to-medium training effect, but estimates became considerably smaller after corrections for possible small-study and publication bias. The authors concluded that the evidence did not establish that repeatedly overriding dominant responses was the mechanism producing broad improvements in self-control.
That doesn't make discipline training useless. It means we should define the target more carefully.
Instead of assuming:
"If I practice willpower, my general willpower reservoir will grow."
we can use a more defensible model:
Practice a behavior → make it reliable → build supporting routines and habits → gradually increase the challenge.
Discipline Is More Than Willpower
One of the most important ideas in understanding discipline is that disciplined behavior does not have to depend entirely on conscious willpower.
Consider two people who both want to exercise.
The first person wakes up each morning and begins an internal argument:
"Should I exercise today? I don't feel like it. Maybe I'll do it later. I have a lot to do."
The second person has established a routine. At a predetermined time, he puts on his exercise clothes and begins walking.
The second person may not possess some dramatically larger supply of willpower. He has simply built a behavioral system that requires less moment-to-moment deliberation.
This distinction is fundamental.
Discipline can be supported by multiple psychological and behavioral mechanisms, although the evidence is stronger for some than others. Stable routines, environmental cues, and repeated practice in stable contexts have particularly useful empirical support, while identity-based framing and self-talk are more heterogeneous areas of research. Specific planning is especially well supported: a meta-analysis of 94 experimental tests comparing people who formed specific if–then plans against comparison conditions found that these "implementation intentions" improved goal attainment overall (d = .65), helped people overcome failures to get started (d = .61), and helped them avoid derailment once underway (d = .77).1
- clear intentions
- specific plans
- stable routines
- environmental design
- habit formation
- behavioral cues
- identity
- self-talk
- tracking and feedback
- automaticity
These should not be treated as interchangeable interventions with identical levels of scientific support. Rather, they represent different tools that may contribute to reliable behavior under different circumstances.
Also worth naming explicitly: none of this happens in a vacuum. Social context—accountability partners, supportive communities, cultural norms—can either amplify or undermine these efforts. This article focuses on individual strategies because those are the ones you can control directly, but if a behavior keeps failing despite a well-designed personal system, it's worth asking whether the surrounding social environment is working against you rather than assuming the fault lies entirely in your own execution.
Therefore, becoming more disciplined does not necessarily mean becoming better at forcing yourself through every situation.
It can mean becoming better at designing situations in which the behavior you want is easier to perform.
The Two Sides of Progressive Discipline
A mature approach to discipline has two complementary parts, which can be thought of as a simple duality: capacity-building and friction-reduction.
1. Capacity-building: develop behavioral capacity
Practice performing important behaviors consistently, including when resistance or temptation appears.
2. Friction-reduction: reduce unnecessary reliance on self-control
Use routines, habits, environmental design, and automaticity so that desirable behaviors require less conscious effort.
These approaches are not competitors. They reinforce each other: you practice a behavior deliberately, repeat it in a stable context, and improve the surrounding system, so the behavior becomes more familiar and potentially more automatic, freeing conscious attention for something more difficult.
Start With a Manageable Challenge
One of the biggest mistakes people make when attempting to become more disciplined is starting with an enormous behavioral demand.
They decide that beginning tomorrow they will exercise every day, read for two hours, eat perfectly, wake at 5:00 a.m., work eight highly productive hours, meditate, journal, study, eliminate entertainment, and never procrastinate again.
That isn't necessarily progressive discipline.
It may simply be an unsustainable collection of intentions.
A better approach is to establish a manageable behavioral baseline.
If you want to develop a reading habit, perhaps begin with twenty minutes a day.
If you want to establish an exercise routine, begin with a realistic amount of exercise that you can perform consistently.
If you want to study every evening, begin with a clearly defined study period that fits your actual schedule.
The principle is:
Build reliability before increasing complexity.
Put more provocatively: start so small that failure is almost impossible, then build from there. That isn't a lowering of standards — it's a recognition that a behavior you actually do at a small scale beats a behavior you plan at a large scale and abandon.
Once a behavior is reliably established, you have a much better foundation for increasing its duration, frequency, difficulty, or scope.
Practice Doing What You Don't Feel Like Doing
There is still an important role for deliberate self-control.
Even the best-designed behavioral system will occasionally encounter resistance.
You planned to study, but you want entertainment.
You planned to exercise, but the couch looks more attractive.
You planned to work on an important project, but checking your phone seems easier.
You planned to go to bed, but you want to continue watching videos.
These moments are opportunities to practice a crucial discipline skill:
"I don't have to feel like doing something in order to do it."
But successfully following through does something practically useful in that moment: it demonstrates that a feeling of resistance did not, on this occasion, determine your behavior. Repeating that experience is what the rest of this piece calls practice, not proof of a growing capacity.
Progress Gradually
Once a behavior becomes reliable, you can progressively increase the challenge.
For example, with studying you might eventually increase:
- the duration of each session
- the number of sessions
- the difficulty of the material
- the amount of distraction you can tolerate
- the complexity of the projects you undertake
- the consistency with which you maintain the routine
A concrete example makes this easier to picture. Suppose the target behavior is a daily walk:
- Week 1: a 10-minute walk, no other demands
- Week 2: extend to 15 minutes once the 10-minute walk feels reliable and no longer requires much deliberation to start
- Week 3: keep the duration, add a modest difficulty increase such as a hill or faster pace
- Week 4: add a second weekly session rather than lengthening the existing one
Notice that only one variable changes at a time — duration, then difficulty, then frequency. That makes it much easier, as a matter of personal experimentation, to notice what seems to be working and what seems to be creating excessive strain. It isn't a controlled experiment, though: schedule changes, stress, health, and simple week-to-week variation can also affect how a given week goes, so treat the pattern as useful feedback rather than proof of what caused what. The same structure applies to reading, studying, or any other behavior: hold most variables constant and move one dial at a time.
You don't need to increase everything simultaneously.
The question isn't:
"How much can I force myself to do?"
It is:
"What is the next level of challenge I can sustain while maintaining reliable performance?"
Different Forms of Discipline
Discipline is not one single behavior. Different situations require different forms of self-regulation. The breakdown below is a practical organizing framework rather than a formal typology drawn from the research literature.

This matters because improving one behavior doesn't necessarily mean that every other form of self-control will automatically improve to the same degree.
It is therefore useful to ask exactly what kind of discipline you are trying to develop.
What the Self-Control Training Research Actually Tells Us
The scientific literature gives us an important reason to be cautious about broad claims of "self-control training."
A 2017 meta-analysis by Friese, Frankenbach, Job, and Loschelder examined 33 studies and found an apparent positive effect of self-control training. However, after statistical corrections for possible small-study effects and publication bias, the estimated effects were substantially smaller, ranging approximately from g = .13 to .24. The authors concluded that the evidence did not establish that repeatedly overriding dominant responses was the key mechanism responsible for broad self-control improvements.
That is an important distinction.
The research does not justify saying:
"Exercise your willpower every day and your general self-control will inevitably become stronger."
But it also doesn't mean that practicing disciplined behavior is pointless.
It means we should focus our strongest claims on what is better established: specific behaviors can be practiced, routines can be established, habits can develop, and environments can be designed to make desired actions easier.
Your Beliefs About Willpower May Matter
There is another fascinating piece of research that fits particularly well with the idea of progressive discipline.
In 2017, Krishna Savani and Veronika Job published Reverse Ego-Depletion: Acts of Self-Control Can Improve Subsequent Performance in Indian Cultural Contexts in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
The researchers were interested in whether people's beliefs about willpower could influence how they responded to demanding self-control tasks.
Their pilot study found a striking cultural difference: American participants tended to regard exerting willpower on mental tasks as depleting, while Indian participants tended to regard it as energizing. In several experiments, the Indian participants showed what the researchers called reverse ego-depletion: after performing a strenuous cognitive task, they sometimes performed better on a subsequent self-control task.
The researchers' later experiments also provided evidence that manipulating beliefs about whether willpower was depleting or energizing could affect subsequent performance.
These findings are intriguing, but they should not be exaggerated.
The study does not establish that Indians generally have greater willpower, that believing willpower is unlimited makes fatigue disappear, or that a person can simply think his way past sleep deprivation or physical exhaustion.
It demonstrates something narrower: beliefs about self-control may influence how people respond to demanding tasks under particular experimental conditions.
That is nevertheless highly relevant to discipline.
If you automatically interpret every difficult act of self-control as evidence that your capacity is being exhausted, you may be more likely to stop.
If you interpret successful effort as evidence that you are capable of meeting the demand, you may approach subsequent challenges differently.
So rather than telling yourself:
"I've used up my discipline."
you might adopt the more measured interpretation:
"This is demanding, but difficulty does not automatically mean incapacity."
That is a hypothesis worth testing in your own life.
The Ego-Depletion Debate
The Savani–Job findings are especially interesting because they emerged within a larger scientific debate over the idea of ego depletion.
The traditional strength model proposed that self-control depended on a limited resource that could become depleted after exertion. But subsequent research has produced substantial disagreement about the size, reliability, and even existence of the classic ego-depletion effect.
A particularly important test came in 2021, when Kathleen Vohs and colleagues conducted a preregistered multisite study involving 36 laboratories and 3,531 participants. The confirmatory analysis found a nonsignificant depletion effect, with an effect size of d = .06. Their Bayesian analysis provided greater support for the null model than for the specified alternative hypothesis.
Interestingly, the study's exploratory analyses suggested that the depletion effect was somewhat larger among participants who reported greater fatigue. However, the study did not find that willpower beliefs moderated the effect in that project.
This does not contradict the Savani–Job findings. The studies addressed different theoretical questions and used different populations, tasks, and experimental designs. Together, however, they reinforce the need for caution: beliefs about willpower may affect performance under some conditions, but the evidence does not show that willpower beliefs reliably determine self-control across contexts.
This doesn't prove that people never experience fatigue after demanding self-control. It does mean that the simple idea of a universally applicable, measurable "willpower battery" that gets drained by one task and leaves us unable to perform the next task is not well established.
That distinction is important for anyone trying to become more disciplined.
You should neither assume that your willpower is an inexhaustible superpower nor assume that every difficult effort has drained a finite supply of it.
A better approach is to pay attention to actual performance, circumstances, and patterns.
Fatigue Is Not the Same as Incapacity
This distinction deserves special attention.
There are times when the correct response to fatigue is recovery. Sleep deprivation, illness, prolonged stress, and genuine physical exhaustion can impair performance and should not simply be dismissed as excuses.
But there is also a psychological error at the opposite extreme: interpreting every experience of reluctance, boredom, effort, or temporary mental fatigue as proof that you cannot continue.
A disciplined person learns to distinguish among several possibilities:
- "I genuinely need recovery."
- "I don't want to continue, but I am capable of continuing."
- "The task is poorly designed and I should change the system."
- "This is an appropriate challenge and I can practice following through."
That judgment is itself an important part of mature self-regulation.
Deliberate Discomfort—Used Intelligently
One practical application of progressive discipline is occasionally choosing a manageable amount of voluntary discomfort rather than automatically obeying every impulse to avoid discomfort.
This is not an argument for suffering for its own sake.
The purpose is to practice a simple principle:
"Discomfort is information, not necessarily an instruction."
You might finish a planned task before moving to entertainment. You might put your phone away during focused work. You might continue a planned study session after the initial enthusiasm disappears. You might follow your established routine even though you would rather do something easier.
These actions provide repeated opportunities to practice behavioral follow-through.
They can also provide evidence for a useful identity:
"I am someone who follows through on important commitments."
That identity does not have to be based on grand declarations. It can be built from accumulated evidence. Put differently: identity is useful when it emerges from evidence, not declarations. Announcing an identity in advance doesn't make it true; a pattern of follow-through is what gives it substance.
It's worth drawing a further distinction here, because identity-based motivation can cut both ways. A descriptive identity statement — "I notice I follow through on things I plan" — is a summary of observed behavior. A prescriptive identity statement — "I should be someone who follows through" — is an aspiration, and aspirations can quietly become a standard you're failing to meet. The risk with prescriptive identity is that a single missed day can flip the story from "I didn't do this today" to "I'm not a disciplined person," and that broader, more damaging conclusion can become self-fulfilling. The safer use of identity is descriptive: let the label follow the evidence, not the other way around.
Use the Environment to Multiply Your Discipline
One of the biggest insights from behavioral science is that you don't have to win every battle internally.
Change the environment.
Suppose you want to study every evening.
You could simply tell yourself to exercise tremendous self-control every evening.
Or you could prepare your study area in advance, put the required materials within reach, block distracting websites, establish a consistent starting time, and connect studying to an existing routine.
The second strategy reduces the number of decisions you have to make.
That is not a shortcut around discipline.
It is intelligent use of discipline.
When you combine progressive practice with environmental design, you get a much stronger system:
Make the right behavior easier while becoming better at following through when resistance remains.
Measure Behavior, Not Motivation
One of the simplest ways to make discipline more concrete is to track behavior.
You may not feel motivated.
You may not feel focused.
You may even feel completely undisciplined.
But feelings aren't the final measure.
The practical question is:
Did I do what I decided to do?
A simple habit tracker, calendar, spreadsheet, or checklist can provide useful behavioral feedback. This is one of the more strongly evidenced levers in this article: a meta-analysis of 138 randomized studies and nearly 20,000 participants found that interventions which increased how often people monitored their own progress substantially improved goal attainment (d = .40), with larger effects when progress was physically recorded or reported to someone else.3
Over time, look for patterns:
- When are you most consistent?
- What situations produce failures?
- Which behaviors have become easier?
- Which behaviors still require substantial effort?
- Where can environmental design reduce friction?
- What should be increased next?
This changes discipline from a vague judgment about your character into something you can observe and improve.
The Progressive Discipline Feedback Loop
Once behavior is being measured, you can establish a simple feedback loop:
Choose → Practice → Measure → Review → Adjust → Repeat
If the behavior is reliable, consider increasing the challenge.
If it repeatedly fails, don't automatically conclude that you are incapable of discipline.
Investigate.
Maybe the demand is too high.
Maybe the timing is poor.
Maybe the environment is undermining you.
Maybe the behavior isn't specific enough.
Maybe you are attempting to establish too many changes simultaneously.
The disciplined person doesn't merely ask:
"Why can't I make myself do this?"
He also asks:
"What can I change so that successful behavior becomes more likely?"
From Deliberate Action to Automaticity
This is where progressive discipline connects directly with habit formation and automaticity.
A behavior that initially requires conscious effort can, through repetition in a stable context, become increasingly familiar and automatic.
The important point is that the automaticity is behavior-specific. If you repeatedly follow a particular morning routine, for example, that routine can become easier to initiate. You should not automatically assume that practicing that routine has created a generalized increase in your ability to resist every temptation in life.
It's also worth resisting a different popular myth: the idea that any new behavior becomes automatic in about three weeks. A 2024 systematic review of health-behavior habit formation found that developing substantial automaticity often takes considerably longer than that, and that individual timelines vary widely — with the review's own studies reporting estimates from as little as 4 days to as long as 335 days depending on the person and the behavior. An earlier, frequently cited study similarly found a median of around 66 days to reach a habit plateau, with a range from 18 to 254 days across individuals.2 The practical takeaway is: habit automaticity often develops over months rather than days, and the evidence base behind these estimates is still fairly limited, so treat any specific number as a rough guide rather than a promise.
None of this diminishes the practical benefit of repetition. Consider the progression:
Deliberate action → repetition → familiarity → habit → greater automaticity → less conscious effort required for that behavior
As recurring behaviors become more automatic, they typically require less conscious deliberation to initiate and maintain. In practical terms, this can free cognitive effort for other priorities—not because research has established a larger general reservoir of self-control, but because that particular behavior demands less active management.
That is one of the great advantages of habit formation — it just tends to arrive later than popular shorthand suggests.
The Goal Is Behavioral Reliability
This leads to a more precise definition of what it means to become disciplined.
Instead of thinking:
"I need to become a person with enormous willpower."
think:
"I want to become increasingly reliable at doing what matters."
That is a much more useful target.
You decide what matters.
You translate it into specific behaviors.
You establish routines.
You remove unnecessary friction.
You practice following through when resistance appears.
You track your behavior.
You adjust the system.
You gradually take on greater challenges when the existing level becomes reliable.
And you allow repeated behaviors to become increasingly automatic.
A Practical Progressive Discipline Program
Here is a simple way to put the concept into practice.
- Choose one important behavior. Start with something that genuinely matters.
- Define the behavior precisely. Specify exactly what you will do, when, and where.
- Start at a sustainable level. Choose a demand that you can realistically repeat.
- Create a reliable cue. Connect the behavior to a time, place, or existing routine.
- Reduce friction. Prepare the environment so the desired action is easy to initiate.
- Practice follow-through. Occasionally act despite ordinary resistance or lack of motivation.
- Track the behavior. Record whether you actually followed through.
- Review the results. Look for patterns rather than simply judging yourself.
- Increase the challenge gradually. Add duration, frequency, difficulty, or another appropriate demand once the current level is reliable.
- Automate what can be automated. Turn repeated behaviors into routines and habits.
- Keep adjusting. When circumstances change, redesign the system rather than abandoning the objective.
Common Failure Modes
A handful of recurring mistakes show up again and again in attempts at progressive discipline:
- Starting too big. Demanding a large behavioral change before a smaller version of it is reliable.
- Relying on motivation. Waiting to feel like doing something instead of tracking whether it actually got done.
- Misinterpreting fatigue. Treating ordinary reluctance or boredom as proof that continuing is impossible.
- Changing too many variables at once. Increasing duration, difficulty, and frequency simultaneously, which makes it hard to tell what's working.
- All-or-nothing thinking. Missing one day and treating it as proof the whole program has failed, rather than as a single missed instance in an otherwise ongoing pattern.
- Over-reliance on tracking. Letting the measurement itself become the goal — obsessing over streaks or logs — rather than treating tracking as feedback on the underlying behavior.
- Failing to anticipate context changes. Building a system that only works under ideal, stable conditions, then abandoning it entirely when travel, illness, or a schedule disruption breaks the routine, instead of having a fallback minimum version ready.
None of these mean you're incapable of discipline — they mean the system needs adjusting, which is exactly what the feedback loop above is for.
What Progressive Discipline Does—and Doesn't—Promise
Progressive discipline does not promise that every person can train himself into possessing unlimited willpower.
It does not establish that every act of self-control makes the next act easier.
And it does not mean that fatigue, stress, or biological limitations should simply be ignored.
What it does offer is a practical framework for becoming more reliable:
- practice important behaviors
- establish supportive routines
- build context-specific habits
- reduce environmental friction
- learn to act despite ordinary resistance
- measure what actually happens
- progress gradually
- use beliefs and self-talk intelligently, while recognizing that the evidence is more heterogeneous
- automate repeated behaviors whenever possible
That is enough to produce substantial changes in a person's life, even without assuming a generalized "self-control muscle."
Conclusion: Train What Matters, Automate What You Can
The most useful lesson from the science of discipline is not that you should spend your life exercising willpower.
It is that disciplined behavior can be deliberately cultivated.
Some of that cultivation comes from practicing specific behaviors. Some comes from developing routines and habits. Some comes from changing the environment. Some comes from learning how to respond when motivation disappears. And some may come from changing the way we interpret the experience of exerting self-control.
The evidence does not justify confidently claiming that repeated self-control exercises create a universally stronger willpower capacity. But it does support a more practical strategy: become progressively more reliable at the behaviors that matter, while designing your life so that those behaviors require less conscious effort over time.
The progression is therefore not simply:
More effort → more willpower.
It is:
Intentional action → practice → reliable behavior → routine → habit → automaticity → greater behavioral capability.
And when a new challenge appears, you begin the process again.
That is progressive discipline: not endlessly forcing yourself to be stronger, but deliberately becoming more capable, more reliable, and more intelligently organized in the way you live.
