Article two gave you a method: how to actually diagram a system you're stuck inside, starting with behavior over time instead of a snapshot.
What neither article did was prove it. Concepts and tools are cheap to hand out. What's harder — and what almost every "systems thinking" article on the internet skips — is walking through a real, specific, lived case from start to finish. Not a hypothetical Sarah juggling a fictional product launch. A system with actual stakes, tracked with actual data, over actual months.
So here's one. This is a health and habit system I've been tracking daily in a spreadsheet for the better part of a year — sleep, movement, stress, food, mood, all logged against a single goal metric. I'm not going to walk through it to talk about the goal itself. I'm walking through it because it's a clean, unglamorous example of exactly what article two promised: start with the behavior over time, resist the linear diagnosis, and go looking for the actual structure underneath.
Step 1: The Behavior Over Time
Article two's first move is to stop asking "what caused this?" and start asking "what has this looked like over time?" So that's where I started — not with a theory, but with the log itself. Plotted out, the trend line wasn't smooth. There were stretches of steady progress, then plateaus that lasted for weeks despite nothing in the routine visibly changing, then occasional short backslides that seemed to come out of nowhere.
That shape — progress, plateau, backslide, repeat — is itself information. A straight line would have suggested a simple input-output relationship. This wasn't that. This was a system with delays, feedback, and more than one variable pulling in more than one direction. The data was telling me, before I'd analyzed anything, that the linear story was already wrong.
Step 2: The Linear Diagnosis Everyone Reaches For
The default explanation for a stalled goal like this is almost always a single-cause story: discipline is the bottleneck, so try harder, track more closely, add willpower. It's the same move article one warned about — reaching for a linear cause when you're actually inside a loop. And it's seductive precisely because it's simple and because it puts the fix entirely inside your own control. If the problem is just insufficient discipline, the solution is just more discipline.
I ran with that story for a while, the way most people do. And like most linear fixes applied to systemic problems, it produced short bursts of intensity followed by the same plateaus — because it was treating a symptom the log had already shown wasn't isolated.
Step 3: Mapping What Was Actually There
Following article two's method, I stopped trying to fix the symptom and started mapping the system the spreadsheet was actually describing. A few things became visible once I laid the variables out side by side instead of looking at the goal metric in isolation:
Sleep and stress were upstream of everything else. On days logged with poor sleep or a stressful event, the following day's habits — movement, food choices, follow-through — degraded in a fairly predictable pattern, even when I hadn't consciously decided to slack off. The behavior I was trying to manage directly was actually downstream of two variables I wasn't managing at all.
Environment mattered more than intention. Days where the "friction path" was set up in advance — food prepped, a specific time block protected, no ambiguous decision to make in the moment — had dramatically higher follow-through than days that relied on willpower in the moment. This is a classic systems point: you don't out-discipline a poorly designed environment, you redesign the environment so discipline is barely needed.
There was a reinforcing loop hiding in the habit stack. Completing one small logged habit early in the day — even something as minor as the first item on the tracker — measurably increased the odds of completing the rest. One habit wasn't just one habit. It was a trigger for a cascade. Missing it didn't just cost that one item; it quietly lowered the odds of everything after it.

Step 4: Finding the Actual Leverage Point
Once the map was in front of me instead of in my head, the leverage point wasn't the goal metric at all. It was the first habit in the morning stack — the one small, low-effort item that reliably triggered the reinforcing loop. That single point, addressed directly, moved more than any amount of effort thrown at the goal metric itself ever had. It wasn't the hardest habit to change. It was the one positioned at the right point in the structure.
This is the core lesson from Donella Meadows' work on leverage points, and it held up exactly as advertised in practice: pushing harder on the symptom rarely moves a system much. Finding the point where a small, well-placed change cascades through the structure moves it a great deal — and it's almost never the point that intuition points to first.
Step 5: What Changed
Once the morning anchor habit and the environmental friction points were addressed together — rather than attacking the goal metric head-on — the trend line changed shape. The plateaus shortened. The backslides became less severe and recovered faster, because the system now had a built-in trigger pulling behavior back toward the loop instead of relying on willpower to restart it from scratch each time. None of this came from trying harder. It came from finding a different point to push.
The Takeaway for Your Own System
The specific goal in this case study isn't really the point — the structure is. If you're stuck on something that resists direct effort, the pattern to look for is the same one this log revealed:
Plot the behavior over time before you diagnose anything. Resist the first linear story your instinct hands you — it's usually a symptom wearing a cause's clothing. Map what's actually upstream and downstream of the thing you're trying to change. And once you have the map, look for the leverage point — not the hardest lever, not the most obvious one, but the one positioned where a small push cascades.
That's the whole method from article two, proven out on a system with real stakes instead of a stand-in named Sarah. The tools were never the hard part. Applying them to your own actual, messy, plateauing, backsliding life — that's the part worth practicing.
