Being Wrong: Why Error Is the Engine of Growth, Not the Enemy of It
Kathryn Schulz's Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error (2010) makes a claim that runs against almost everything we're taught about mistakes: error is not a defect in human cognition. It's a byproduct of the very faculties that make us intelligent — pattern recognition, inductive reasoning, and the willingness to make a leap from limited data to a working belief. Schulz, a journalist who later became a Pulitzer Prize-winning New Yorker staff writer, spent years researching the psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, and cultural history of wrongness to make her case. The result reframes error from a moral failing into something closer to a design feature — one that, handled well, produces humility, empathy, creativity, and progress.
The Pessimistic Model vs. the Optimistic Model
Schulz frames the whole book around a contrast between two ways of treating error. The pessimistic model — the one embedded in most of our institutions — treats mistakes as rare, shameful, and evidence of stupidity, laziness, or bad character. Under this model, the rational response to being wrong is to deny it, hide it, or defend against it at all costs.
The optimistic model Schulz proposes instead treats error as essential equipment. It's how we revise our understanding of the world, how science advances, how art surprises us, and — she argues — it's ultimately our wrongness, not our rightness, that teaches us who we are. Error isn't the opposite of learning. It's the mechanism of it.
Why You Can Never Feel Wrong While You're Wrong
The book's most distinctive idea is what Schulz calls error blindness, and she gives it a memorable name: the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle of Error. The core observation is simple but has real teeth — you cannot experience being wrong in the present tense. The instant you recognize a belief as false, you've already stopped holding it. There's no internal alarm that fires while you're in the middle of a mistake. You only ever get to say, after the fact, "I was wrong." Until that moment arrives, a false belief feels exactly like a true one: it feels like just seeing things as they are.
This is why confident people and mistaken people are, from the inside, indistinguishable from each other — and often indistinguishable from themselves five minutes before they were proven wrong. There's no felt difference between "I'm right" and "I'm about to discover I'm wrong."
The Triad of Disbelief: How We Explain Away Disagreement
Because we default to assuming our own perceptions are accurate, disagreement becomes a puzzle we have to solve about the other person, not about ourselves. Schulz identifies three go-to explanations we reach for when someone doesn't share our view:
- The Ignorance Assumption — they simply don't have the facts we have.
- The Idiocy Assumption — they have the facts, but lack the intelligence to reason correctly from them.
- The Evil Assumption — they have the facts and the intelligence, but are deliberately rejecting the truth out of malice or self-interest.
Notice what's missing from the list: the possibility that we're the one who's wrong. That option rarely makes the shortlist, because it would require us to first suspect ourselves — and error blindness makes that suspicion hard to generate from the inside.
Where Error Actually Comes From
Schulz traces wrongness to several layers of how the mind operates, each one a reasonable adaptation that nonetheless produces mistakes as a side effect:
- Perception. The senses don't record reality like a camera; the brain reconstructs it, filling in gaps with expectation. Schulz uses arctic explorer John Ross's famous 1818 mirage — mountains that appeared to block a strait that was, in fact, open water — as a case where perception felt completely reliable and was completely wrong.
- Memory and knowledge. We confabulate without noticing, our memories degrade and reshape themselves over time, and we lean hard on inductive reasoning — generalizing from limited observations because it's fast and usually good enough. We also treat "I know" as far more certain than it typically deserves to be.
- Belief formation. Beliefs function as efficient mental shortcuts, and once one is in place, confirmation bias goes to work protecting it — filtering incoming evidence to keep the belief intact rather than testing it fairly.
- Social reinforcement. Homophily — our preference for people who already think like us — combined with what Schulz calls a "disagreement deficit," insulates beliefs from real challenge. Groups amplify this further, which is how everything from cults to political echo chambers sustain shared certainty long after the evidence should have disrupted it.
The Cost of Treating Error as Shameful
Because education, law, medicine, and politics largely operate on the pessimistic model, Schulz argues these institutions create strong incentives to conceal mistakes rather than examine them. That's a serious cost: hidden errors can't be learned from, so the same failure modes repeat. The emotional pattern she describes tracks something like the stages of grief — an initial assessment of how big the error is, a period of denial that functions as a buffer, and then either acceptance or a deeper transformation. When the mistaken belief was central to someone's identity, that transformation can be genuinely disorienting; Schulz profiles cases like a former Klansman who became a civil-rights advocate as an example of what it looks like when someone rebuilds their sense of self around a reversed conviction rather than defending the original position at all costs.
What to Do With All This
The book isn't just diagnosis — Schulz argues for a set of practical shifts, or fallibilism: building an active, working expectation that you are currently wrong about something, without knowing which something it is yet. A few of the shifts translate directly into daily habits:

None of this works under the pessimistic model, where error is something to be stamped out. It only works once wrongness is treated as the normal cost of having a mind that tries to make sense of an uncertain world.
The Pessimistic Meta-Induction from the History of Science makes the same point at a larger scale: most scientific theories that were once treated as settled fact have since been overturned or substantially revised. If that pattern held for centuries of our best-tested beliefs, Schulz's implicit challenge is to ask what odds you'd genuinely give that your own current convictions are the exception.
Schulz's closing image is worth sitting with: she likens error to the forces that let living things grow — sunlight, sap, the raw material of change — and, finally, to hope itself. We keep forming beliefs and acting on them, knowing some will turn out wrong, because we trust the process enough to risk being wrong again. That trust, more than any particular correct belief, is what she means by intellectual courage.
